A tribute to |30+|Zapped-Again
Definitely the hardest post I have written...I only wish it had done him justice for the man he was.
April 18th, 1953 - September 10, 2002 - Posted Tuesday, September 10, 2002 by whoever |
We have just lost one of the nicest people that I have known. Zapped-Again has passed away this afternoon in his bed after having some recent chest pains. I am at a loss for words so please bear with me as I try to put a few words together for this initial news post.
Zapped-Again was in a class of his own as a husband, father, and mentor that everyone I know looked up to. He was a great man among great men. He was not only a great man to his own family, but also to others like foreign exchange students he has taken in. Please say a prayer for his family as his family/friends put his body to rest and think of the times they were able to share with this wonderful man.
Zapped-Again will always be remembered fondly by so many people he effected in the gaming world as well, not only in the U.S.A. but also abroad. Stay tuned for more memories as we collect our thoughts and put together a tribute to Zapped-Again. Also, on Sunday look for an AVI of Zapped-Again doing what he loved to do best when relaxing. Thanks for all the comments we have been receiving in our IRC channel in memory of him. We have had an outpouring of a few hundred folks that knew him as "THE GENTLEMAN OF Q3F".
<[30]Zapped-Again> Good Battle Gentlemen |
Many folks have swung by our IRC channel to leave kind words in memory of Zapped and we appreciate it. Our team was at a loss for words tonight and had a special GTV of Zapped-Again's last game's demos. We appreciate all that everyone has done, and please continue to keep his family in your prayers. E-mail me if you have any tidbits of info, pictures, memories, etc that you would like to have included in our memorial for Zapped-Again that we will work on over the next while.
The fellows over at Railbait put on a 24 hour mini only tribute to Zapped-Again.
Zapped's wife has asked me to relay this info for anyone in the Dallas-Fort Worth area who would like to pay their final respects to Zapped in person.

Come to remember and celebrate the life of Dana "Zapped_Again" Dye. He was a wonderful man, both online and off, and his family would love to meet some of the many friends that he made online. I know I'll miss his wide grin as he regaled me with tales of his minigunner conquests over dinner; he truly loved this game, and he truly cared about you all of you guys.
Take care,

[30+]Domitian: I am so sorry to be the one to break the news......
Zapped has passed away a few hours ago. He was a great friend and a loss I already feel.
I am not good with words at a moment like this, but I am sure you are all as shocked as I am.
Domi
[30+]Dragonfly: I'm at a loss for words.
I had the honor of playing with him late Monday night [2:00-4:00+am]
And we had a battle, me as a agent trying to knife him, him finding me!
He was laughing and in good spirits!..of course his dog was in the back round!
I remeber first seeing him on the Pubs, and being so impressed with him as a mini, that I began to try to get him to join 30+.
[Dom would say "get him to join!"]
Well it took about 6-8 months to get him to join!
He would spec us, and just watch how 30+ played on pubs.
He had every clan looking to get him, people would joke that 30+ would never get him.
I began to go against him just to test him. He was very impressed with how 30+ people acted and liked what
He will be dearly missed!..I've had many great memories of playing with and against him!
We had a blast tonight with allot of servers running all minis!!
[30+]Chi: I am not good at all the emotional feely stuff. But tonight has made me cry for one of the first times in my life. There are some people in life who make an impact in your life. Zapped was one of those people.
Over the past few weeks I have been working with Zapped on his avi. He wanted to use ACDC Problem Child. He also talked about Alan Parson Project. [edited out]
Zap you will be missed more than you can imagine.
Dave

[30+]Domitian: I have changed my tag in memory of zapped.
seta name "^4[^530+^4]^5D^4omitian^5.^0ZA^7"
the "." was chosen for its simularity to the guild guild ".fb" that he was a part of.
The letters "ZA" are in black to symbolize mourning. I invite anyone in this clan to use this tag "suffix".
Rest well Zapped......I miss you............
[30+]Zeno: My condolences go to Zapped’s family and on-line friends as well. And friends of Zapped, there are many. Without exaggeration I can say that from the first time I “met” Zapped as an admin on Railbait, I felt great respect and admiration for him. As others have said, he has always been fair and cool headed as an admin.
That goes for his clan play too. He’s even taken himself out of games when an opponent clan had a player drop, even after being asked to stay in by the D coordinator (and maybe me). I can’t imagine a better role model for us all to follow in gaming and in life than Zapped.
I feel fortunate that I have had the opportunity to play by his side. I can’t tell you all how much I regret missing a chance to meet and have dinner with him when he invited me not long ago. If I could have any of my life’s decisions to make over, that may be the one I’d change.
I will be thinking of Zapped often, but especially the next time I hear the voices of our 30+ teammates. I confess that there are tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat as I am typing this. I know I can’t say enough to describe how much Zapped means to us all, so I’ll stop. My prayers will be with you Zapped, along with the prayers of your family, Railbait, 30+, and many, many others.
Kevin (Zeno)
[30+]Stager: "To be saddened by Dana's departure is truly an honor. It has been a priviledge to know and play alongside a man of such character."
[30+]Stager - aka Dave
[30+]BerZerQ: I never had the privilege to meet Zapped in real life, yet I feel like I have lost a brother. He will be missed.

[30+]KC Hotshot: It was my pleasure to be Zapped-Again's friend and teammate. I will truely miss him and his kindness. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

30+ Councilor: My family and I will send our prayers to his family and loved ones...
30pluschinook: Sorry to hear this news about a fellow 30plus member(sadly I never knew him). Out of respect for his family and friends we should keep this at top of the forums so those who live near might have the information needed to attend the services.
God Bless his family and comfort them at this time of need.
30+ Turin: I just wanted to say I am sorry I did not get the chance to meet and game with him. I most certainly will keep his family in my prayers over the next few weeks.
This is such a sad way to be reminded of our own mortality, often times I think of my online friends as being untouchable by the real world perhaps this can serve as a reminder to us all that behind each and every name on this board lives a flesh and blood person and potential comrade and friend.
I wish only the best for his family and friends in this time of sorrow.
30+ eiEi_arRrgH: My condolences go out to his Family, friends and the members of the Q3F team.
30Corwin: I have almost no dealings with the Q3f World, but I have even seen and heard his name with my limited exposure to Q3F. The Q3F community has suffered a great loss and a true friend to the game. On a personal note, I have talked to zapped many times and always came away with a good feelings. He was always there to help out in any way. I feel for his family and my heart goes out to them. I know that he is in a better place and am glad I was able to know him while he was on this earth. Godspeed.
D-Coy: My condolences to Zapped's family and to all the 30+ clan, even though I only knew him from playing D together on pubs. He was fair, dedicated and fun! Oh yes, he's going to be missed. My sincere condolences.
We'll meet again Zapped!
Frew: Our condolences from the [OtH] family to Zapped-Agains family , the 30+ Q3F team and 30+ family. We will say a prayer for you all
Easy: Well what can I say. 30+ has been dealt a bad blow but you guys will bounce back. My condolences to Zaps family and the clan. He will be in my prayers. 30+ you guys had always been there for me with NLM and Zapped was a recruit at one time =-) and never the less blessed me with his mini-gun =-) and sportsmanship. I personally will truly miss him.
Easy: Great Loss...
Since I cant get on irc or anything I want to post here that Zapped was by far the very essence of why gaming online is such a joy. He was truly a great quaker and a great person from how Dom and Who use to talk about him when I was sitting around in 30+'s channel. With such a great sense of when to play and when to be serious its a real shame to hear what happned to him. Everyone should atleast take a moment to remember this exceptional guy who should be a model on the maturity we all should exhibit when playing a game like our mod. Ill never forget the "Come and get zapped again" binds that he would flash up after mowing you down with his hefty minigun. And to top it all off I think on Railbait over all hes had the most minigun kills of anyone EVER. Zapped will be missed and leaves a big hole in the 30+ line up as well as my heart and others in the community. Cheers to you bud! and thanks for the frags.
Tarrant: A Solitary Moment
It is unfortunate when a community has to endure any loss, but moreso when that community is one as small as this one. And beyond that, when that loss is part of one of the most pleasant, fun, and spirited groups out there, that not only play the game, but one hopes, lives, the way they should.
We bid adieu to ZappedAgain from 30+. Condolences to his family and friends.
T.
Sandwich: :(
Today we mourn the loss of a friend, a comrade-in-arms. Zapped was one of the guys who would make time for anyone in need of a hand or just an answer to a question. He played the game as it should be played, a GAME. He enjoyed his time with us and likewise one could always enjoy seeing his lil catch phrase pop up as he mowed you down with his minigun. (I know you've all experienced a massacre at his hands along the way)
If more of us took his attitude into playing we'd all be better off for it. So I say to everyone... raise a glass up high and remember a good player, and great person.
Thank you Zapped-Again. You will be missed
plasma: We will miss ya big guy! Our prayers go out to his family.

Ninja: i was saddened when hearing of his loss, he was on outstanding gentleman in a game overrun by whiners (including me) and always kept a cool head. even if you didnt know him well enough, good comments are always welcome i am sure.. idiot comments by people like common are not.
Ninja: As a player and, i would like to think, a friend of Zapped's I would like to
get some words out about how much of a high class and quality guy he was. It
saddened me to the core when i read of his death even though i had only spoken
to him online. In a game overrun by teenage guys with more ego than sense he
stood head and shoulders above everyone with his level headedness and maturity
at all times. Playing games and matchs alongside and against him was an honor
and will be etched into the memory of everyone.
One particular match that sticks out in my memory was the 30+ vs RawR match on
2mach where I had the joy of going directly head to head as minigunner against
him. Of course he scored higher than me but the challenge was the greatest I
have faced in over 2 years of Q3F gaming. truely a match for the ages and I
hope one of his personal favorites aswell.
His loss is a huge one for the community he strived to make a better one, but
his memory will live on in those who spoke to him even if it was only a few
times or even to those he dominated to the fullest on server and in clan
matchs alike. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends and he
will be remembers by me always.

t3mpus: I noticed today that Zapped has passed away. I thought i would come and post something in the foroums saying how sorry i was for his untimely demise, but alas, it won't let me post. So to you I say, its a sad sad day in the community when someone like Zapped passes on.tempusformer clan member of 30+
Ice Nine: There are no words to express the sense of loss I feel. While I never met the man personally, he was the most level-headed and even-tempered person I ever had the priviledge of playing quake with.
Zapped Again, wherever you are, you will be missed tremendously.
SemperFI: He was quite possibly the Nicest man to grace our community and maybe even ANY game community. Almost EVERYONE respected him and his very kind and patient ways. He has helped many of us out with our mental burdens like a great father figure from folk tales. I know he will be deeply missed at my home since both me and my woman knew him to be a very kind person, as does my daughter for the ways in which he helped her. He never spared a thought to helping others.. he just did it. He never had an evil streak that seems common among players in our games, he was there to have fun and help others. I know heaven has just receive another great soul not commonly found.
Sandwich: My condelences and prayers go out to the family of Zapped Again. I haven't been playing q3f all that long but since I have I have been playing against him. I think we should all take the time to reflect on the kind of person and player he was. If we could all learn to be more like him, this mod would be much better off.
Thank you Zapped Again. You will be missed.
CKKxsTiNkFiSt: know it sounds dumb but I have a tear falling from my eye as I sit here and type I remeber playing with zapped A million times. In fact he just kicked my ass sunday night in a match. He was a hell of a Q3F player and a hell of a man from what I hear.
YOU WILL BE MISSED
Seether: I don't think it's dumb at all, I'm crying too. ZA was a great guy. I know he was a great mini-gunner, but most importantly, he was a great person. He never got mad at anything and always helped everyone out with whatever they needed. I'm so sad I never met him in real life. I was down in Texas last year and he gave me directions to come visit him but I never got time. Damn regrets. He has to be the first person I've ever mourned whom I never met, from online. If that makes sense. Go in peace ZA.
Batman: i have sorta stopped playin q3f recently but i just by chance stopped by here and reading this, i'm crying n stuff, lack of words right now.. sorry to hear bout that he was 1337, and will be missed very much.
Mac Gunner: I herd the news in #negative-x, my condolences are with Zapped's family, I'm sure hes in a better place now. He was a great man, he has earned my respect forever and always.
Wile E. Coyote: Yes , very sad to hear. I have been playing for a while now and and have played many games with zapped. He was an all out good person. He stood up for me when people thought i was cheating. I always knew i could count on him when I played D. I always dreded seeing him when I played O. I will remember him as we all should in our games. We should set up a 18 gun salute.
[Ac3]Fraggle: Most of us never met him, but at least online, he always had a even temper and a kind word to say. It seemed like he truly gained enjoyment out of the simpler things in life such as q3f.
From the moment I began playing this game, he has been here, and usually when I played, he was right there, gunning away. This is truly a saddening day for us. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
BurninBusH-[R]-: We all have played along side of or against Zapped Again at one time or another. I myself enjoyed His style of gameplay since the Beta-1. Even though I never got to a personal level with Zapped I feel a sort of gap that can never be filled. My sorrows go out to his Family and Dearest Friend's. Zapped You will Forever Be Remembered Here at Q3F.
Calibur: We will miss ya zapped. My DEEPEST condolences go out to the family of one of railbaits hall of famers zapped again
Tempest Prime: I must say this is coming at somewhat of a shock, just like it is for everyone else who had the priviledge of knowing Zapped in any capacity. I've been around Railbait for a couple of years (there are a great many of you that have been around longer than I have), and I must say that there aren't many people that measure up to what I can only describe as the greatness that is Zapped Again.
Zapped is a great guy. I say IS because his presence and influence here has left a permanent mark that will never fade. He has always beem fair in judgement, freindly to the guy next to him, helpful to those in need, and inspiring to those that need guidance.
I'm sure he's up in the big arena in the sky now, holding his minigun and wondering where that damned recon named Tempest Prime ever went to. I must say that I never had the opportunity to finish all of the minor things between us (none of which were bad), but at least I know that he's somewhere good and safe, wherever that may be.
To Zapped's family, I am truly sorry for your loss. I know sometimes that what we see from afar and what you see up close doesn't always match, and I may be truly lacking in my understanding of how great he is. I can only offer you my sincere condolences and assure you that he is at peace now.
My prayers are with you all.
]V[ephisTo[GLPong]: ;( sitting here reading the logs of the news brought tears to my eyes....althoughi never met or really knew the guy i hated the way he owned me everytime i got near his flag(lol)....but i have alot of repect for zapped cuz underneath my tough sometime abnoxtious attitude i always knew he was a really good q3f player and it pained me to admit that....and dare i say it but one of if not THE BEST minigunner ive ever had the grace to play......zapped could be usually found at or near the flag. he wasn't that offensive minded he was defence trough and through my condolences go out to his friends and most importantly to his family....zapped you will be missed by me although i wont miss you killin me and i feel its fitting to say in the imortal words of zapped "Another one has been zapped again." (i hope i got that right if not ow well its close)
R.I.P [+30]Zapped-Again
Python: Right now i just want to say
Zapped you will be missed
[root]#: I have been playing q3f almost two years now, and out of all the people I met during this time, Zapped was the coolist, most patient, most kind, and nicest man to play the game. I am so mad at myself now cause during the time I lived in Dallas (for six years up until 3 months ago), and he lived short distance away in McKinney, I never got around to meet the man in person. I know this may sound a bit strange coming from me (a guy that is known to get in trouble once in a while), but of all of the admins here (which are all cool), Zapped was my fav. He will be missed. RIP Zapp.
al'Thor: I am not sure how to even express the gut-wrenching pain.
He was a very honorable man, and a good friend. Much advice came from him, free and wise.
While I never got a chance to meet him in person, I know he'd have been one of those people you would never forget.
Weasel_Girl was the only other member of his family I really got to talk to since his other son was with us on the forums for only a short time.
Lil Weasel_Girl, I am so sorry. Your father will be missed by me and my wife. Thank you for sharing him with us for the time that we had. I loved him as a close friend.
I will always remember the big guy with the poor spling and apparently atrocious cooking. His stories of the "magic sock drawer" and his obvious pride in his children were well received.
My condolences to your family.
Thomas "al'Thor" Clark
]V[ephisTo[GLPong]: one more thing...i was thinking is there any way to change the death message when a minigunner kills some1???
if so it should say "(so and so's name) has been Zapped again by (so and so's) minigun"
i think it would be a good tribute to the man who loved this game so dearly
Mondoterrifico: Damn, sometimes u forget that there is real flesh and blood out there attached to these nicks. My condolences to his family.
Chasma: To a great man, and a great family, hope your having the greatest time of your life where ya are now zapped. My deepest condolences go out to the family, God Bless.
5 @ N N Y: Probably the most level headed and nicest guy I knew in the whole Q3F community. You'd be hard pressed to find someone better. He posted a thread in the admin forum a couple months back saying he wanted to visit New York. (which is where i live and i woulda cleared my schedule just to meet him) He had to reschedule the original planned date for mid september. That was his last post on that thread
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
He will be truely missed.
RIP Zapped. We miss you.
CKK-Gate: We at CKK are sorry to hear that zapped past away. he will be missed by all of us.
Punk: omg..i dont even know what to say...i didnt know him that well, but he was awesome...when i first read it, and still now, i got that awful feeling in your throat...i guess that 'sinking' feeling...damn, im so lost for words right now...i guess all i can say at this point is, that i know what its like to have a father have a heart attack, but not to lose him...recently my dad had a heart attack and not long after we found out he had cancer ..........all i have to say is i am terribly sorry for your loss, im sure zapped was just as good a father, if not much much better, as he was a quake player and friend...
again, i am sorry to hear
Punk
LaVaGoD: My Prayers go out to Zapped's Family.
Zap was one of the nicest people I have meet online and I don't think I will ever meet someone as nice as he. Many a times I ran the other way in game when I saw who was guarding that flag. I played D a couple times with him and he helped me out on my D game and I will never forget how quick he was to help someone.
I am really at a lose of words. Q3F has lost it's greatest Mini but we will never forget Zap because he will always be with us in our hearts and mind.
I want to try an put something together in memory of zap so please post Links to pics of Vids of Zap in them.
I will also be adding something speical in an up coming map just for Zap.
You will be missed and never forgoton my friend.
Meaty: My prayers go out to his friends and family, that they may be left with only the most treasured memories of their time with him.
My only expierence with the man was a good one, at quakecon, i was out with the Urban Terror development team(for whom i gave two proud years of development) and the Q3F (Splash Damage) team. Zapped picked up the entire bill including my coffee. Generous to the last.
Rest in peace

Black Jack: I don't know what to say. I'm at a loss for words.
Zapped was one hell of a player, a great admin and one of the nicest, fairest, most level headed person I've ever had the pleasure of knowing online. I played a lot of games with him and I was usually one of the guys who stayed up all night talking with him and joining him on the servers.
My sympathies go out to his family who he spoke very highly of and lovingly for.
Goodbye Zapped, you will be missed.
Whitepyro: You know. This is really hard. All I can really think about is. Me and Zapped in forts in the basement. Working together and having fun. Those were the days. I cried alot today. He was a great friend. And a good guy to pub and play a match with. A Very Respectiable man. I know he will be severly missed by me, And many other people around the world. Aslong as the urban terror dev team, Which he bought drinks for at quakecon this yr. I hope we will never forget zapped, because he was 1 and only 1 man. Zapt, You were loved! We will miss you!
I would also like to send my sympathys to Zapt's Family.
novaSphere: I had to read the news post about ten times before I would accept it. I kept wanting to think that perhaps he had to part with the railbait team due to personal reasons or time constraints; but now the truth has finally sunk in.
I too would like to send my deepest condolences to Mr. Zapped's family, all his friends, as well as his fellow Railbait admins. He was, without a doubt, one of the best people I had the pleasure of somewhat-knowing on the internet, and I'm really sorry that I didn't get to know him better before his passing.
Here's to the greatest Fatboy of all time.
-Andrew
hannibal: I've been sitting here for awhile now trying to figure out something fitting, deserving of such a good person, to type. I can't.
Zapped Again, you were taken away too soon from those who loved you in real life and online. God, take care of him and his family.
Speaking of tributes... if you want to make a tribute to Zapped Again here at Railbait, retitle the Minigunner kill award (The What I Can't Hear You Award) to the Zapped Again award. That way the minigunner kills leader will always have ZA's name on it.
Hitman: Well i been sitting here since his son came into the channel and told us the terriable news. Not really sure what to say. He was one of the best guys i have never met in real life. Always thier when you needed a hand or was thier to listen to you complain. He was a great guy that will be missed. I send my best wishes to everyone in his family and his clan. I also thank his son and daughter for comoing to IRC and letting us know.
line_engine: You have no idea how shell shocked I am to have learned this. I have had the privilege of knowing DB (Zapped Again) for many years. We were in the same Model Railroad Club for years and that is where we met. But, for the last 2 years and 3 months, I have sat 5 feet from him for many many hours a day. He was my mentor, my teacher in my new career and my friend. He was responsible for the ease of which I was hired here. He told them I could do it and they took it as gospel. He is the one who got me started in the game and like him, I wanted the mini gun. It is a shame all of you in this community will never get the chance to meet him in person. He leaves an impression like no other man I have known. He loved his work, his cars and most of all his family. I have a heavy heart right now, but wanted everyone in this community to know how I felt about him. You don't meet a Zapped Again too often in life. I am proud to be able to call him my friend and I know I am a better man for knowing him.
He loved this game.
So long bud! I will miss you.

swage: Heaven must've been overrun by the nme and only Zapped could save them.
Godspeed Buddy!
HabLo: I dont want to get repetitive, as what pretty much everyone is saying, i feel too.
Id like to start out with thankyous.
Thank you railbait for giving me the chance to play along side, and talk to such a great person.
Thank you 30+ for giving ZA a home away from railbait, in which he was able to mature as a player.
Thank you Community for pulling together in a time of need.
and most importantly, Thank you Zapped Again. You have made me a better person. Honestly, when look at the servers in Gspy, your name is one of 2 or 3 I look for. I feel you are a father figure aswell as a brother. You have given me great adivse over the years i have had the pleasure and the blessing to know you. I looked up to you as the level headed admin of the bunch. The one who's fuse was the longest of all. We have also grown together IMHO. I started REALY playing q3f about the time you did i think. we grew in skill together, and there WAS a time when you played recon I remember teaching you a conc jump on spamtech to the blacony. playing against you has challenged me and made me stronger, while playing beside you has made me love you more. You will never be forgotten.
CKKxSkullCracka: I got the news a bit ago from Calibur and gurlygirl while I was driving on my cell...I had to pull over from tears interupting my sense of good judgement.words cant describe how I feel towards his family.I still remember when I was teaching him how to conc jump on stag and had just seen his name in irc last night and wanted to pm him and say hey but was too tired...I hate loosing the good ones and man was he the best.he was the only person I ever banned as an rb admin and that was just to teach me how to do it...we had a good laugh about that.I will miss him dearly and remember him as the GREAT father and person that he was...his minigun will forever be the one that I would chose to have my back...and his friendship shall deeply be mourned by me.Only the good die young they say but its still never fair when you realize thats true.My heart and prayers go out deeply to his family in this time of sorrow. My he be in a better place then here...amen.
GG's bro GG's may you have god standing with you now bro and enjoy all his glory...amen

Switcher: While no one on this board knows me yet, I feel compelled to post a reply. Like Line_Engine, he changed my life. Line_Engine and Zapped convinced me that my career needed a change and got me on the right track to a new field. His field, of which he was a master. He helped me get a job and provided me with knowledge that no one else could provide. I was in the same train club for many years with him and Line_Engine, and worked along side him for a VERY short time.
I cannot tell you how this makes me feel as I am still not sure, I just want to let him know how much I appreciate what he did for me. I will keep turning the cup upright before it fills, and Text everything. GOODBYE DB!
Zaevious: It was a typical night at work, I get home to play some q3f on Railbait and, what's this? In Memory of Zapped Again...
I quickly brushed aside the first thought that came to my head and thought "wow, zapped quit q3f?!" So before I jumped in I figured I'd go to railbait.com and see what was up.
. . .
I still find it hard to face the fact.
Just about all that I could say has already been said over and over, he was a great guy and a hell of a mini! Good Luck My Friend!
And to his family, my sincerest grievences. You may have lost his body, but you'll NEVER loose his Spirit! If you ever need anything, the q3f community will be here for you! May you always have the best of memories!
-Jason Price
Thanatos: I was floored when I heard the news tonight....What a horrible day for q3f...We have lost one of our finest, and no one can ever replace zapped.
I wasn't close to him personally, but he sure did kill me a lot. I've been around q3f for 2 years, and I thought that the mighty zapped again, would be as permanent as the game itself.
My condolences to his family, and friends.
Though his mighty gun has fallen silent, let us not forget what he has meant to this game, and the people who play it. God bless you, Zapped Again.
KrazY: Man its really wierd that i feel sad when someone i have never even met dies.....but i loved playing on railbait when he was playing. Everyone gets into duels between people even though its a team game. Especially when its someone you know is good and you are trying to come to their level or just show em whos BOSS. Zapped was one of the best pepes that i have ever played this game w/ and i feel honored to have been accompanied by him. Take care and my deepest sympathies to his friends and families.
Gee: They say the way you play is the way you live. You must have done excellent in both, as they say. We have never played together, still the loss of such a person I now know you are grips my soul.
Rest well Zapped Again.
Lisa / Thalaxasis: After writing a three or four page long post for this thread and then deleting it, I've come to realize that there is really nothing left to say. This ancient mod's community suffered the loss of one of its more known icons, and that is something that can never be repaired or replaced. I'm unsure why I feel the need to shed a tear over someone I've never seen face to face, but for some reason I do, and at the risk of sounding sappy, I'll say that my sympathy goes out to both of his families.
I would like to second the motion to have the death death-by-minigunner changed to “ was Zapped Again”, or something similar. Nothing could be more fitting as a show of respect, then to make him a small part of the game he loved.
“Heaven must've been overrun by the nme and only Zapped could save them.” - I couldn't help but smile just a little, thanks swage
Striker: May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back,
the sun shine warm upon your face,
the rain fall soft upon your fields,
and until we meet again may God
hold you in the hollow of His hand.
Tinman: What is there to say that hasn't already been said. I will miss you zapped, you were one of the greatest. It should be noted that only you could have inspired a response like this from so many who never met you. This just shows what a wonderfull person you ARE. My condolances go out to your family.
Your Friend Timothy Stephen Forde. May Heaven Bring you Joy.
Mad Max: Smashed with the news... Don't know what to say.. Zapped will always be with me.. Virtually. I'll always see he's spirit on the battlefield.. Unfortunately, I never saw him in person, but I'm sure he is a wonderful person. God bless...
MoPri: This has to be the saddest day i have ever lived. Over the years i have seen feinds come and go, but this is the first time ive cried over losing a freind, he has touched my life that much.
Zapped was a good freind to me over the last few years, hes was always around when i needed an ear to talk to. He was the most honest an noble person i have ever encountered and proboly ever will.
To Zappeds family, your father and husband was a great person to all around him. He talked about you with pride every day and he loved you dearly. He will be missed by all around him and especially me.
To Zapped, i dont know what comes after this life, but in my heart i know that you are off in another place making people as happy as you made me. You will never be forgoten and one day i hope to see you again.
TinCow: Zapped was the most respected and liked admin this community had ever seen. No one will ever be able to fill his shoes. He will always be missed and remembered by those who play here.
CKKxSirSidVici: U was the only player I am really fear and I will miss "the wall" and I will sure never forget U / thx for last 3 years it was a great time Zap / THX for all

JablOOmski: Heard about Zapped Again while playing on a european server just a minute ago and was shocked and sad. My deepest sympathy goes out to all people that knew Zapped Again.
Even though i didnt really knew Zapped, i spent hours and hours and hours playing with him and of course all the people that are regular on railbait. These people all brought me years of great fun. It makes me real sad to hear on off those people has past away. Zapped Again..., thank you for the fun..........
FunGlue.M3: I just read the news a few minutes ago after getting to work. I just could not believe my eyes, which are now full of tears.
When you meet someone on the internet, it is sometimes hard to judge a person's character because all you see is computerized text... you don't really know if their words are sincere. But I have to say that Zapped struck me as a genuinely great guy. Fair, honest, patient.
I believe that our human language purposely lacks words to adequately express extreme human feelings of sorrow, love, and respect. To be able to give descriptive words to such emotions would only trivialize them, and from reading the many posts, it is clear that all of us who have met Zapped, online or in person, are experiencing these feelings together.
I will miss him dearly. My deepest sympathies to his family. God Bless You. Godspeed Zapped Again.

Jack Frost: Anyone could wear the minigunner's skin.
yet......
In this man shone through a great kindness
You got a sence of a fatherly figure, a good person with a big heart. It might just be my impression but thats what I got when I would see him in the game. When I would see the list of players in a game, it would always make me happy to see the name:
Zapped Again
My deepest condolences to his family.
I wear a smile just for having had the chance to play with him, we are all lucky to have experienced his presence..
I tip my hat to Zapped Again! Celebrate his life!

Aurelius: Life sucks. I feel very bad. And even though this doesn't mean much, I am very greatful for the True Combat server that Zapped sponsored.
Wraithix: wow that pic of him really just drove the feeling that much deeper
He was a great guy from what I knew of him. Always polite, never saw him angry or get cocky with anyone at anytime, while being a great player all the while. I always dreaded seeing him by the flag stopping me from my Bhopping. He truely helped me become a better player against Mini's.
I wish I could comment on something else besides Q3F related things.... he came off as being a really cool down to earth guy. I will truely miss playing with him, against him, and just seeing his name in the field and here.
RIP
Don Pedro: [mute]
StrAgZ: Ive only recently got around to be able to read these boards again since I didnt have internet. And well there is absolutely nothing that could have shocked me more then seeing this. I want to send my deepest condolences to Zapped's family for their lost in a great man. I dont really know what more to say other then that he will be greatly missed by all who have come to know him.
Rest in peace Zapped Again

ThePeoplesElbow: Our community is small. I would guess that when someone passes in a large 'net community, even an admin of a popular server group, only their close friends & clanmates take particular notice.
In our case, because we are a relatively (look at cs) small group of players choosing from a VERY small list of servers, we've all probably fragged eachother at least once or twice, probably much more.
Like many others, I am astonished at how I feel about this. I barely knew ZA, probably spoke less than a 100 words to him ever, so why am I, why are so many of us moved by his loss?
I suggest that it's because of how he played. He not only played fortress well, but he played fortress correctly. Team oriented, position/function oriented, he knew his job and did it. No cruel taunts or jibes on someone else's skill, no personal vendettas against anyone, no expressed anger or frustration at anything or anyone in the game.
Now that I look back on what he did and did not do in the game, he set an example. My guess is, he sat back in his chair, comfortably filling his favorite role: D-Mini; immune (or as close to immune as a human being can be) to anger or spiteful frustration.
Truly, it is sad that he passed so young (50 is young - no really). On the other hand, I read from the logs that he has 2 children (correct?) that both seem to love him dearly, and he has hundreds of people who will remember him, and take notice when he's not there to frag them.
We should all be so lucky...

[LB] Animal Grace: through the forums or on irc, zapt was always a person i could relate with. i'm sure if we had know each other in real life, we would be great friends.
but i mourn the loss of him just the same.
he was always sure of what he said, there was no argueing with him because he was always right, if he did'nt beleave in what he was saying he would'nt say it.
in game, people talk about a 1 man offense, well zapt was a 1 man defense.
he had the minigunner class down pact. he use a combination of his gun and grenades that made him a hard target to hit.
i doubt if i will be able to play q3f again without thinking of him.
this has left a hole in my heart that only time will heal, but i shall never forget...zapped again.
<[30]ZaptAgin`fb> CUMON DOWN AN GIT ZAPTAGIN!
CPUkid: i can't believe it...i still just can't believe it.
zapped was a great guy. i can remember the many times playing q3f with him. he would always back me up at base while im engie, always kick my ass as a minigunner...i never did know how he was so good at that class. the times where we would mess with macgunner in irc and just joke around. i can't believe it....
zapped, you will be missed greatly. hearing this news really got to me. i never did know him that well, but he was still one of the nicest people and greatest admins railbait has ever had. my condolences go out to his family. i don't know what to say...you were a great friend zapped...

plasma: My condolences to his family and friends.....You will be greatly missed big guy!
He was a model railroader as am I! Posted a little farewell on my site Trains Winnipeg
Its not much but its the least i can do! This is a small community and im glad to see every one put aside thier diffrences to mourn the loss of one of our best.
RIP Zapped_Again
Meow-Mix[AR]: He was the man for 3yrs i've played with. He took over the mini love/hate position of Lor3 and did a wonderful job. no matter what time i happened to be at my comp (just finished summer vacation) he was on a server. i could always count on a pubbing buddy. He did a great job at mini. If you happened to have killed himwhen you had to go against him,it would give you a very satisfying feeling. he was a pain, but a pain that i dont mind.
Peace & Love to him and his family
Come on down an git ZAPT AGAIN!!
NO SOUP FOR YOU!!

Tyrael: ... what can I say ... I remember gettin killed my him repeatly ....
My prairs are with his family
zYnair: i just watched that screensaver. i had saw that pic on the forum before watching and saw zapped, i didnt know it was him cause ive never seen him. i thought to myself "that looks just like my dad, freaky" and now to come find out that, that was zapped. just the fact that he looked like my father sadness me even more.
the greatest things in life are taken away in one swipe and without purpose but are remebered forever in our hearts. godspeed zapped.
PsYcHoB1rD: Zapped has surely brought all of us q3f and x-q3f players together alike to mourn the passing away of a dear friend who has done a lot for this community and in real life.
Zapped to me is a mentor, someone who listens to my crazy ideas, funny stories and my downfalls and problems. While he typed slow which was quite funny at times because id type faster than he can read and respond back. I can never forget the times he used to play along with some of the stuff we chatted about in #railbait chan. I certainly cant forget the times we battled it out in q3f. whether it be in clan matches or in railbait pubbing, he would always make sure everyone got Zapped Again.
I always talked about going to quakecon down in Austin, TX maybe hoping to see semper and zapped down there and some of the q3f dev crew. Unfortunately i missed out this year and my last opportunity to meet zapped in person . Thats how important he was to me, i really wanted to meet him in person, and his family and get to know them and share my experiences with them. shit, i cant even type right, i'm trying to hold tears away.
Zapped, i thank you for the times u've shared your advice with me, i thank you for your helping railbait as a community to grow, Finally i thank you for being a friend to talk to.
CUMON OVER N GIT ZAPPED AGAIN!
CR-: There really isn't too much to say that hasn't been said already. All I can say is I feel for zapped's family...I've been there before and it's very hard, but everything will be alright, he's at a better place now.
It was a privledge playing against him. I'll dig up some demos of him owning me and post them when I get some time.
RIP
entropy[BH]: Perhaps I've started to late to express anything new in this post... But just look at the length and the depth of all the posts here, and that should tell you something about Zapt's persona. I know I played him on countless pubs, and in only a few matches.
One of the fairest and kindest men I've ever had the pleasure of meeting, I feel sorrow for his family and friends.
You'll always be in our memories, Zapt, and now you are helping those with your knowledge and kindness where we cannot yet reach.
RIP
Jayr: Like others have already said, there isn't much left to say. Zapped was such a great guy, I don't know how we'll get along without him. He was truly a great person. My prayers go to his family.

PsYc: I am at a loss for words after hearing this tragic news, at first, I thought he had just left Q3F. Then, it took reading over the post about 5 times before it sunk in.
What else can be said but:
gg Zapped
Rest In Peace
The Old Fart: My sincerest sympathies for his loved ones, family and close friends. I was holding my
fathers hand 15 years ago while he passed away. Just know that time will help the pain and the fondness will only grow in your heart.

aka The Old Fart
Iam1WItheFLAG: I havent visited this site in a long time (I was almost suprised my account still worked). I quit playing q3f almost a year ago now. The thing I miss the most is the community, especially railbait.
I had a free minute between classes and thought I would stop by and see what the lates news was. Maybe post some new topic and pick on my old friends a little. I figured Zapped would be one of them that I would mention in my post. When I was what the headline was it took a little while for it to REALLY sink in. Of all the people in the q3f community, Zapped Again had my utmost respect. This news pains me.
My condolences go to the family. I never met the man, and havent played with or talked to him for some while now, but his loss still has a huge affect on me. I can't begin to phathom what it must be for them.
Steven Fowler
Shadowfaxx: I have been in the Q3F community since beta1b and never have I seen such an outpouring of love and respect as in this thread. Zapped would be pleased as hell that he touched and enriched so many lives in his time with us. Zapped you will be missed and remembered with the fondest of memories, you were a father, a confidant, a priest, a scholar and most importantly you were a friend. I thank you for all of the help and guidance you gave myself and the community as a whole.
RIP big guy.
Locki: I'm one of the lucky few from our community that got to meet Zapped in real life and I have a very clear memory of each occasion. He was someone everyone looked forward to seeing again.
We've posted on Q3F.COM giving our respects. Our thoughts are with Dana's family - especially Juliana.

fiCti0naL: oh man,im just now finding this out. Ive played with him on many occasions.. condolences to the family and anyone who was close to him.
hannibal: Thanks, from me. He was THAT important to us in the North American community on a daily basis. I'd like to think the big guy would be touched by how much we miss him. It is true, you don't know what you've got until it is gone.
Jin: Zapped, always be remembered long after I give up gaming. These games are always different, but Zapped was very consistent... Always - fragged again, by zapped again.
Metal_Matrix: As I visited the Railbait web page for the first time, I could not believe what I read.
The man, The amigo, The Mini I came to respect is gone.
I wish to express my deepest condolences and prayers to Zapped Again's Family.
All I can say is I will miss him greatly. I considered him a friend even though I never meet him personally. His demeanor and advice reminded me of my departed Grandfather. You can always count on Zapp to tell you if you were getting out of hand which meant that you were since he was a patient man.
As the sun comes up and the day begins.
You move to the game you always like to play,
Looking for those players you like to frag,
But now it’s different for a Minigun has fallen silent,
No more will the whirling of the gun or the clacking of boots
Instill the fear in hearts of the enemy,
It will be different now as you turn the corner,
Not to see the Minigunner you come to respect,
Yes as I play the game there will be a void,
As the Man we all know and admired,
Has gone to another calling,
May God know the spirit he has acquired,
Has a heart of gold,
The man we come to know as Zapped Again
[OtH]Kaon: I just hope that we all passaway really old with our children and their children and their children by our sides all healthy and loving life.
That is all really that will matter.
My prayers are with Zapped' family... may their pain heal swiftly.. and may their memories of Zapped bring smiles to their faces.
D3athMuffin: Sorrow. Never to be zapped again. The world darkens a shade.
Ridge: A complete Gentleman and a class act. hurts to lose a great guy like zapped. I Tip my hat to a fallen warrior and such a great guy. blessings to Zaps Family.

Zapped Again - 13-09-2002 - 15:55 BST - by Locki
During QuakeCon 2001 in Mesquite Texas, RR2DO2, Fluffy, BirdDawg, Vorrik and I had the pleasure of meeting two Q3F players in person that left a lasting impression on us; Zapped Again and his daughter, Weasel Girl. Here's an extract from our QuakeCon 2001 diary a year ago:
"...We also got to meet several great people - all Q3F players too, the two that I remember the most were Zapped Again and his daughter Weasel_Girl. Meeting anybody that plays your game is always nice for the ego, but I was honestly humbled by the interest shown by Zapped and Weasel - both of them had a sincere interest in the future of Q3F, and a real concern about the future of game-play - it made me think of things in a different way."
Earlier this year our Lead Level Designer was offered a job at Ritual in Texas, and the first person to offer him somewhere to stay was Zapped Again.
In August we found ourselves back in Mesquite for QuakeCon 2002, and again in the company of Zapped Again and Weasel Girl. We met up with him on the exhibition floor and arranged to meet for a beer later. This time he stayed for dinner, and at id Software's local hang out, he introduced me to Petron Tequilla and shared a number of funny stories. At the end of dinner he paid for everyone; not just our team from Splash Damage and Q3F, but the whole of the Urban Terror team too.
To me, Zapped Again was the perfect player. He reminded us of why we make games. On Tuesday the
10th September he died of a heart attack.
Q3F 2.3 will be dedicated to his memory.
